The cult occult American band Coven will be making its debut in Croatia, in Močvara, on April 26th. Anyone who is at all familiar with the history of heavy metal knows this band very well. The concert should be especially well-attended by all fans of Black Sabbath, on whom they undoubtedly had a great influence, and you will also have the opportunity to see the band that introduced horns (sign of horns) to the rock and roll world. It is still fronted by the legendary Jinx Dawson, so the opportunity to meet the Mother of Metal is simply not to be missed. Greek occult rockers Saturday Night Satan will perform before Coven! Tickets for the price of 24 euros can be purchased through Hangtime ticketing, after which their pre-sale price will be 27 euros. On the day they will cost 30 euros and will soon be available for purchase at the Dirty Old Shop.

Vocalist Jinx Dawson and bassist Oz Osborne (!) had previously played in the band Him, Her and Them, and when drummer Steve Ross joined them, Coven was formed in 1967 in Chicago. Shortly after their formation, they were already touring with Jimmy Page and his Yardbirds, as well as Alice Cooper. Just two years after their formation, they signed a contract with Mercury Records, for which they released their first album, “Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls”. The music on the album was mostly standard psychedelic rock; what made it special was its strong focus on occult themes. The first song on the album is “Black Sabbath”, and it ends with the 13-minute “Satanic Mass” with the singing of Satanic prayers. The album also featured the band’s famous poster – “Black Mass”, which shows the band members making the sign of the horns as they prepare for a Satanic ritual over a naked Jinx Dawson lying on an altar. Very soon they had a hit on the charts: the cover of the song “One Tin Soldier” was the theme song for the movie “Billy Jack” from 1971. The band gained unwanted attention with a sensational article in Esquire magazine titled “Evil Lurks in California,” which linked the counterculture’s interest in the occult to Charles Manson and the murders of Sharon Tate and others. As a result, Mercury pulled the album from sale. Their connection with the seventh art was also manifested in the movie “Heaven Can Help”, where Jinx played the main role. She wrote all the music for the film, and in addition to original drummer Steve Ross, new members joined the band for this project. In addition to the aforementioned debut, the band released three more albums: “Coven” (1971), “Blood on the Snow” (1974) and “Jinx” (2013). In any case, Coven is not to be missed!
