The HU is a modern rock band deeply rooted in the traditions of their homeland. Founded in 2016 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, it consists of producer Dashka as well as members Gala, Jaya, Temka and Enkush, and the band’s name comes from the root of the Mongolian word for human being. Their unique approach combines instruments such as Morin Khuur (horse head viola), Tovshuur (Mongolian guitar), Tumur Khuur (jaw harp) and throat singing with contemporary sounds. They call it Hunnu Rock, and some of the songs thus include war chants and poetry in the Mongolian language.
2019’s debut album, “The Gereg,” landed at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top World Albums and Top New Artists charts, and received praise from the likes of NPR, GQ, The Guardian, The Independent, Revolver, and even and Sir Elton John. The album peaked at number two on the UK Rock & Metal Album Chart and broke digital sales records in Australia. This was followed by sold-out tours throughout the USA, Europe, Asia and Australia, as well as Mongolia’s highest state award, the Order of Genghis Khan.
The deluxe version of the debut album included collaborations with Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach and Lzzy Hale of Halestorm, and Mongolian’s rendition of “Sad But True” caught the attention of Metallica, and for “The Metallica Blacklist” 2021 album, The HU covered the song “ Through The Never”. The band also wrote and recorded an original song for EA Games Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order that was included in the game.
They released their second album “Rumble Of Thunder” from 2022 in the midst of world tours and performances at festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza, and on it they collaborate with names like William DuVall from Alice in Chains or Serja Tankian from System of a Down. The band was recently included on the soundtrack for the thriller “The Retaliators”, and became the first rock/metal band to receive the prestigious UNESCO award “Artist of Peace”, and they have just been announced as the opening act for Iron Maiden on their North American tour.
Media outlets like NPR describe The HU as a band that fuses screaming heavy metal guitars and traditional Mongolian throat singing, highlighting their cultural importance and unique musical identity. The Guardian says that the band combines complex Mongolian music and noisy Western metal, calling it a combination of Genghis Khan and Judas Priest. The chance to hear unique Mongolian rock and The HU is this fall at Tvornica kulture in Zagreb.
